I read this basic idea years ago. I’ve put it into play a few times and it was effective, even satisfying. But it fell aside like many good habits can. So many labor intensive, big effort required or just straight up “joy sucking” tasks plague most everyone. Cleaning out the garage or the closets, organizing or updating everything from clogged email accounts to the trunk of the car is so mundane or just better left for another time. And maybe our most ridiculous belief in life is that we will always have time later for everything in general. So, fifteen minutes of dedicated, methodical effort towards just about any narrowly focused activity, task, chore or “wanna do” thing is not so painful when there is a definite and short end! Maybe it can be applied to several different 15 minute blasts at a few different things on each day or every other day. Maybe others would stretch it to 20 minutes…crazy people.
My over-sized garage is a sorry mess! I’m convinced that a solid day is needed to get it right. I can’t seem to find that day. I can however, work like a crazy person making meaningful, effective changes for fifteen minutes without a problem getting exhausted or generally sick of the whole deal. Maybe I can even stretch it to 30 minutes if I’m feeling bold, but that’s working extra! I want to read the Bible front to back. I started once but gave it too much “read as much as possible” at one sitting kind of time. I’m gonna start again with the fifteen minute plan. If I toss in several of these type things I want to do or get done, not all of them are objectionable by the way, just kind of overwhelming to go start to finish…..I can get some things done and done. So, you’re challenged now to try it on whatever you like. And…I’m giving myself just fifteen uninterrupted minutes before I get started on my garage situation. MS
